We grow a lot of herbs in pots on our deck. This year we grew chives, green onions, thyme, rosemary, oregano, basil, and sage. We had a bountiful crop this fall so we decided to make four gifts sets to give away. I made trays out of some 5/4 walnut, maple, and two from cherry. I milled the pieces and then cut them to size. I used a Forstner bit to drill out the bulk of the material. I then made a template out of some hardboard to make the trays consistent. I routed out the rest of the material so the bottles were loose, but not too loose. A little sanding and a few coats of amber shellac, and they are ready to give away.

This is a chunk of carved metal put in a soldering iron. Takes a few minutes to heat up but it works pretty well.
Putting my malers mark on the bottom of the trays.
First coat of Shellac applied.
All the trays routed and sanded.
The Maple and Cherry trays drilled out.
Drilling out the Maple tray. Maple is much harder than Walnut or Cherry.
Drilling out the Walnut tray.
All the blanks milled up and cut to size.
These are the jars that I will be putting the herbs in.
